Think Differently Dash Support

These volunteers will help with handing out bib numbers, and t-shirts. We will also need help with signage placement for the dash, course control, cheering, and finish line help.  Volunteers will also be needed to run with some of our athletes participating in the dash.

Hours: Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Buzz Support

These volunteers are needed to BEE THE BUZZ for the Think Differently Dash athletes.

BUZZ volunteers will need to arrive by 9:15a.m., and check in at the registration table located in the Crannell Street parking area in Poughkeepsie. Once checked in, all BUZZ volunteers will proceed to Main Street and get ready to cheer! Bring cow bells, posters, and your enthusiasm. Come and show your BUZZ spirit for the Think Differently Dash athletes and for the City of Poughkeepsie.  Race begins promptly at 10:00a.m.

Hours: Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 9:15 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Race Day: Bike Pacers and Sweeps

These volunteers will be in the middle of all the action and helping to ensure a safe and green race. Pacers will lead each race while sweeps will communicate with command centers on location of last runner for duration of race.  You’ll be our eyes and ears on the course.

Hours: Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 6:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. on bike

Location: Bike pacers and sweeps will begin at Marist waterfront.

Race Day: Course Marshal

Course marshals provide crowd and runner control. You’ll be our eyes and ears on the course. An assertive personality to keep spectators off the course, a friendly attitude, and the ability to answer the same question many times are required. All roles on the course require volunteers to stand for the entire assignment and deal with large numbers of people at a time.

Hours: Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 6:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. depending on assigned location

Race Day: Course Signage

These volunteers will assist in setting up mile markers, shuttle signage, parking signage, and other appropriate signage – all spread over several miles In the Poughkeepsie area.    These volunteers will use a provided vehicle to place signage on the rail trail section of the course. Persons need a driver’s license to drive to the locations for the shuttle and parking signs.

Race Day: Event Green Team

These volunteers will be the event day advocates for the Green Race. They will direct participants in trash placement and help roll toters to appropriate recycle stations.  Heavy lifting may be required. This is a great job for environmental groups and those wanting to promote sustainability.

Race Day: Event Set Up

These volunteers like to wake up at the crack of dawn to help set up start and finish staging areas. This involves setting up tables, chairs, sponsor signage, cleartainers, finish line water station, etc. One of the rewards of arising early is getting to see the exciting start of the race!

Hours: Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 4:00 a.m.-6:45 a.m.

Race Day: Event Clean Up

The excitement is still in the air and these volunteers will assist in striking tables, chairs, signage, cleartainers, etc… Heavy lifting may be required.  These volunteers will see the beautiful views of the Hudson River as they put everything back to its original state.

Hours: Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Race Day: Medical

These volunteers will be responsible for the provision of medical care at assigned medical tent or first aid station. You must be able to stay for the full duration of your assignment and attend a medical orientation in advance of the event.  

Volunteers are needed from the following fields:

  • Physicians—we are looking for, but not limited to, specialties in: sports medicine, emergency medicine, orthopedic, GP, cardiology, and podiatry
  • Nurses
  • Physical therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Psychologists and MSWs
  • Massage therapists
  • Pharmacists
  • EMTs and paramedics
  • Athletic trainers
  • Non healthcare/medical personnel for vital administrative roles

We also need students and others who will assist medical professionals at medical aid stations along the course and at the finish line. If you are interested in learning more about being a medical volunteer contact soneil@walkway.org

Race Day: Merchandise

Everyone wants a Walkway Marathon t-shirt!  These volunteers will help with merchandise sales, including setting up of merchandise displays and selling of the Walkway Marathon merchandise.

Race Day: Parking

These volunteers will help direct and manage parking for the runners, volunteers, and VIPs.   Volunteers with experience in parking would be appreciated to make the operations go as smoothly as possible.

Hours: Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 5:30 a.m. - 9 a.m.

Location: Ocean City Job Lots, 3456 North Road, Poughkeepsie, NY and Marist College waterfront

Race Day: Photography

Photography experience is required for these volunteers, with experience in road races photography desired.  These volunteers will use their own cameras to capture the starts and finishes of all the races as well as activities along the course, such as water station volunteers, turn arounds, scenic views, etc.   The photographers will be asked to consolidate his or her pictures on a flash drive for the Walkway Marathon staff for posting.

Hours: Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 6:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Location: depends on assignments, such as Walkway, Marist College, Dutchess Rail Trail, Hudson Valley Rail Trail, etc.

Race Day: Post Race Food

These volunteers will help set up and pass out food to the finish line runners.  They will also help to clean-up remaining food items.  Some of these volunteers are needed after the race to take any usable leftover food to pre-arranged local charities in the area, using their own vehicles to deliver the food that afternoon.

Race Day: Water Station Set Up and Take Down

Early birds, strong backs, and stamina are required for these volunteers.  The water stations play a vital role - providing the needed hydration, cheering on the runners, and monitoring the pace of race.   Prior to the race starts, each water station needs to be set up with tables, water (lots of water!), electrolytes, cups, and cleartainers.  Volunteers will load trucks with these items and at each water station handle the set-up, and later the take down.

Race Day: Water Stations Teams

Each water station is staffed by 20+ volunteers. These volunteers assist with the setup, breakdown, and cleanup of one of the 10 water stations, distribute water and electrolyte to the runners, and provide lots of enthusiasm, cheering on the runners.   The Water Stations are a great place for your group to volunteer together. Groups of 20 or more volunteers.

Hours:  Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 6:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Locations:  Locations along the Dutchess County Rail Trail, the Walkway, and the Hudson Valley Rail Trail
